Next iPhone, smaller iPad likely to be announced at separate events

Two of the most trusted Apple pundits on the Internet spoke up this morning on the likelihood of Apple announcing both the next iPhone and the rumored smaller iPad at the same event on Sept. 12.

In short: ain’t happening.

John Gruber:

I’m thinking it makes more sense for Apple to hold two events. First, an iPhone event, focused solely on the new iPhone and iOS 6. Then, the iPhone ships nine days later, and there’s another wave of iPhone-focused attention as the reviews come out. Then, in the first or second week of October, Apple holds its traditional “music event”, exactly along the lines of the events at which they’ve been debuting new iPods for the last decade.

And Jim Dalrymple, famous for his simple, take-it-to-the-bank affirmations of “yep” hinted today that Gruber’s assessment is on target.

So it looks like we’ll the next iPhone announced Sept. 12 followed by the smaller iPad at the annual Apple music event in October.
